How to Stay Safe at Palm Beach Zoo’s Brew 2 at the Zoo 2017
September 19, 2017 – Adam Mann
Featuring more than 60 local craft beers, live music, beautiful endangered species and more, Palm Beach Zoo’s Brew 2 at the Zoo 2017 is a must-visit adults-only event that’s perfect for craft beer enthusiasts and animal lovers alike.
It’s considered the lowest carbon footprint beer festival in the Southeast, and features some of the area’s tastiest local brews. The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, September 16 from 5:30 – 9 p.m., but has been rescheduled to Friday, October 13 from 5:30 – 9 p.m. due to the recent effects of Hurricane Irma.
But with events that involve alcohol, it’s always smart to know what safety risks should be considered before attending the event. Auto accidents, slip-and-fall accidents and other personal injuries could come into play at a sold-out event like Brew 2 at the Zoo. Here are a few safety tips to think about before you go:
Tip #1: Come with a group.
If you plan on attending this event with a group of people or even just one person, try and stay with them the entire time you are at the event. Having people to rely on during the event can help reduce the chance of personal injury or crime.
Ask someone in your group to watch your belongings if you leave them unattended. If you can, leave valuable items at home.
Tip #2: Create a plan and stick to it.
Outside in the Florida heat, it can be easy to become dehydrated in a short amount of time, even without alcohol involved. Make sure to drink plenty of water during your beer sampling. If you start feeling too hot, take a moment to sit in the shade or in an air-conditioned room. Avoid over-exerting yourself. Protect your skin from the sun and reapply sunscreen throughout the day. Consider wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, hats and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
Lastly, never leave your drink unattended at the festival. It is best to keep your drink with you at all times to monitor it.
Tip #3: Avoid walking hazards.
Try to stay clear of overly crowded areas to avoid being pushed. Make sure to walk slowly on slippery surfaces in case of inclement weather or spilled drink. Be aware of any other hazards on walkways, such as garbage or twigs. With these potential hazards, keeping your shoes on is the way to go to avoid a potential slip and fall or premises liability.
Tip #4: Plan transportation.
With an impressive beer line-up, there are plenty of new and delicious brews to try at the event. With this in mind, there is a potential for going above the legal blood alcohol limit for driving. If this is the case, make sure you or other people you know aren’t getting behind the wheel.
If you’re with a group, you can also manage your transportation costs by using Uber or Lyft’s split-fare setting.
If you aren’t planning on using ride-sharing, then consider appointing a designated driver. Or, plan on having someone sober pick you up. Be safe on the road, if you suspect someone is under the influence while driving, call 911.
