Unfortunately, auto accidents aren’t always avoidable. But when it comes to what you can do after the fact, there are a few things you can avoid to ensure you’re on the right road toward recovery.

Here are three common mistakes that many people make after an accident that can be easily prevented:

Mistake #1: Assume the blame yourself.

In the heat of the moment, it’s common for people to apologize to the other driver or passengers, or assume the blame, even if they weren’t at fault. In tense circumstances, it’s easy to want to just make things right with the other person(s) by saying “I’m sorry!” or “I feel like that was my fault”, without realizing that this could seriously hurt their accident case, should they try to file a suit soon after. During the chaos and even afterwards, it’s best to stick to the facts. Don’t answer anyone’s questions that you don’t know the answers to at the time.

Mistake #2: Ignore injuries or neglect to see a doctor right away.

With a car, it’s easy to assess the damages inflicted after a car accident with the naked eye. But with people, it’s vastly different. What could seem like a minor headache or slight neck discomfort at first could potentially turn out to be something more serious, like a concussion or internal bleeding. That’s why, regardless of the injury you may or may not have received, you should seek medical attention within the first 14 days following your accident to be sure you’re eligible for Florida’s PIP coverage.

Mistake #3: Accept a settlement offer.

Shortly after an accident has been reported and insurance companies have been notified, it’s very likely that the at-fault driver’s insurance company will contact you to bribe you with a settlement offer. And although it may seem like a lot of money at the time it’s offered, it likely won’t cover the full amount of expenses you’ll end up paying for all your medical bills associated with this accident. Make sure that if you speak to an insurance adjuster, you speak to a personal injury lawyer before accepting a settlement offer as soon as it’s offered.
