Ways to Avoid Getting in a Car Accident: Miami | Call 800-332-6436

If you’re a frequent driver in the Miami area, you know how attentive you have to be to stay safe on the roads of all the high-traffic areas throughout the city. But being attentive isn’t the only way to be a safe driver. You also have to find ways to remove yourself from dangerous situations, as well as drive defensively.

So whether you’re seeking ways for yourself or for a loved one to avoid getting into a car accident in Miami, use these helpful driving tips to guide you along a safe path to your destination.

Tip #1: Avoid the temptation to use the fast (far left) lane only.

Miami is a very busy city that’s well known for its bumper-to-bumper traffic. Which means that there’s often a lot of frustrated drivers on the road who are trying to get out of the congestion as quickly as possible. Many of them speed through the fast lane whenever possible, putting themselves and others at a much higher risk for an auto accident, as there isn’t much shoulder space to pull out onto if avoiding an object or another vehicle. One way to try to stay safe is by keeping in the right lane so you can a) drive a little more slowly and b) have more shoulder area to drive onto if need be.

Tip #2: Know where all the high-traffic intersections are and try to avoid them during peak hours.

In Miami, there are many frequently used intersections that have proven to be pretty hazardous for drivers. According to an article in Miami New Times, these are the most dangerous intersections in the Miami area:

  • SW 137 Ave. and SW 152 St. (Kendall)
  • SW 117 Ave. and SW 152 St. (Kendall)
  • NW 107 Ave. and NW 12 St. (Doral)
  • SW 137 Ave. and SW 56 St. (Kendall)
  • SW 117 Ave. and SW 72 St. (Kendall)
  • NW 67 Ave. and NW 167 St. (Miami Lakes)
  • NW 72 Ave. and NW 36 St. (Doral)
  • SW 137 Ave. and SW 88 St. (Kendall)
  • NW 87 Ave. and NW 12 St. (Doral)
  • SW 107 Ave. and SW 72 St. (Kendall)

Tip #3: Keep your blind spots in mind.

Whether your vehicle is small, medium-sized or large, it’s important to remember that every vehicle has blind spots. That’s why you should always use your turn signals, physically turn your head to look for vehicles in the surrounding area and try to stay out of the blind spots of other cars whenever possible. You should also adjust your side and rearview mirrors to give you a clear line of vision to these blind spots, giving you the most visibility possible while driving.

Tip #4: Know what your vehicle’s limitations are and don’t push them.

Even brand-new cars have limitations. But whether you’re driving a new or older car, it’s crucial to know what your vehicle can handle. Is it good for driving long distances? Can it handle intense weather conditions? Is it fit to brake quickly and safely? Can it accelerate rapidly if necessary? What about its tire traction, handling capability and more? Miami is a big city to explore, so know what your vehicle can and cannot do, and don’t push it too far or you may increase your risk of an accident.

Tip #5: Steer clear of nighttime driving.

Of course, there are times when driving at night is the only option possible for getting to your destination. But if you can avoid it, try to find a time of day that’s still well lit to drive. Driving after sundown can be especially dangerous, not only because it decreases your visibility, but because many nightclubs and entertainment venues are open until very early hours of the morning and there are significantly more drivers under the influence of alcohol during these times.

Tip #6: Remember to keep up with routine maintenance for your vehicle.

Well-known for its unpredictable weather, Florida is very prone to sudden rainshowers, intense heat and more. That’s why it’s essential to keep up with regular maintenance on your vehicle so that it can adapt to certain hazards quickly and effectively. For instance, if it’s raining and your vehicle has fairly new tires that are properly inflated, you’ll have much less of a chance for hydroplaning. By having new windshield wipers, you’ll have much more visibility while driving during heavy rain. Well-functioning brakes mean less likelihood for a crash. Don’t forget: accidents aren’t always caused by driver negligence—they can also happen from a malfunction caused by lack of proper maintenance on your vehicle.

Whether you’re a Miami resident or you’re just passing through the area, take advantage of these helpful tips to help you or a loved one avoid getting into a car accident.
